Why Community Engagement Matters in Business

Written by Damien Hicks
CFO | Entag

As CFO and part-owner of Entag, I’ve always believed that business success is a balance between profitability and purpose. Success isn’t just measured by EBITDA or gross margins, it’s also about the impact we make in our communities and how we choose to show up.

At Entag, community engagement is a core value that underpins our culture. It’s something our team is genuinely passionate about. We see it as our social responsibility to give back and support those who give so much to the communities we live and work in. Whether it’s youth education, health initiatives, or local causes, we believe that strong communities build strong businesses.

One of the most meaningful ways we live this value is through our involvement in Valley Velo, a cycling initiative that has raised significant funds for the MND and Me Foundation and the Compass Institute over the past two financial years. These organisations do incredible work, supporting those living with Motor Neurone Disease and empowering people with disabilities to live their best lives. Being able to contribute to their missions, not just financially but through awareness and partnership, has been deeply rewarding and something our team has truly rallied around.

We’re also proud to support other key community-focused organisations, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), PCYC (Pic above), and Busy Schools, SunnyKids, Compass Institute, and The  Everyday Foundation. These partnerships go beyond sponsorships, they give us the opportunity to get our team out of the office and involved in meaningful, for-purpose work. In many cases, we also provide IT services to help these organisations operate more efficiently and securely. It’s a win-win: we support causes we care about while building long-term, values-aligned partnerships.

Community engagement has also strengthened our internal culture. It gives our team a shared sense of purpose and pride. It reminds us that what we do matters, not just for our clients, but to the broader community. Earlier this year, we had 20 team members and friends ride between 50–150 km along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in support of Valley Velo. It was an incredible experience that created a strong sense of camaraderie and connection, all in support of a great cause.

If you’re a business leader wondering where to start, my advice is simple: look around and listen to your team. What are they passionate about? Chances are, your people are already involved in purposeful community work. You’ll be amazed at the initiatives they’re supporting. Find them. Support them. Partner with them. You’ll be surprised by the impact it makes, not just externally, but within your business too.
